My Maine Man
October 19, 2006 | 5 Comments
And so we are down to one game. John Maine takes the hill and outduels Chris Carpenter. He challenged the hitters, and the Mets are rewarded with some more life. I’ll take it.
Of course Billy Wagner had to make us sweat just a little bit. Surely he was trying to provide Joe Benigno with some more fodder.
It looks like it will be Oliver Perez tomorrow, and that seems like the right decision to me. Darren Oliver has not started in two years, and there is no reason to break that string just yet. We all know game seven is an "all hands on deck" situation, but we need a fast start. And it is wise to start the game with someone who is used to actually starting. There is an entirely different mindset to beginning a game, and Perez is the one who is used to taking the hill first.
One more game, baby. Just one more.

Not too shabby for the throw-in in the Anna, I mean Kris, Benson deal.
Still in a panic over tonight, though. But YA GOTTA BELIEVE!
Cerrone had a whole thing on the “throw-in” moniker. Actually, Julio was the throw-in in that trade, as the Mets had to take on his contract. Of course, Julio netted El Duque, and IF the Mets advance and IF El Duque pitches in the Series, that trade will have netted two starters, both more effective than Benson.
I’m nervous, but I have a good feeling about the game. I might be watching with my eyes half-closed.
Just wondering, is there anyone (besides Maine) who wouldn’t pitch tonight?
Even Glavine, as much as that may make you shudder?
I highly doubt Traschel would make an appearance. In fact, I am reasonably sure he has made his last pitch as a New York Met. Other than that – you’re right. It’s all hands on deck, and even Glavine could be used in a pinch.
Guess not, so far – Perez just batted in the bottom of the 5th.
Interesting.
