DC Moment

January 29, 2008 |

I sort of half-watched the State of the Union last night.  It being Bush’s final one, I felt somewhat obliged to tune in.  What struck me was what happened after it was over.  Bush was mobbed by well-wishers and was busy signing programs.  As Brit Hume noted, here we have a President whose approval rating is in the tank, who is opposed by more than half of the people in the room, and yet he’s being mobbed like a rock star.  Also, it showed Bush in his natural state, interacting with other people.  Lots of commentators have noted how Bush is just a different guy when he’s dealing one-on-one with people, and that really came through last night.  He’s so much more at ease and affable.  If only we had more moments like that it in the last seven years.

What was even cooler was that on our way to pick up the dog from our friend who lives in Capitol Hill, we were stopped by a motorcade.  Judging by the size of the motorcade and the size of some of the vehicles, it was clearly either Bush or Cheney, and probably the former.  I kind of chuckled at the fact that the President of the United States had just driven right past us as he was about to deliver his final State of the Union address.

Having lived in the DC area for over six years, I still find moments like that pretty cool.  One of the more memorable moments of 9/11 was when the President’s helicopter passed over our apartment complex as he returned to DC to deliver that evening’s national address.  Yeah, I’m a bit of a political groupie, so I probably find that more fascinating than most people.  But it goes down as just another DC moment.
