With the GOP race all but decided, it might be tempting for Republican voters living in open primary states to cross the aisles and try to affect the Democratic selection process. No doubt most Republicans feel that Hillary Clinton is much more beatable than Obama, and so perhaps some Virginia voters might just try to swing the results – and indeed John Miller has gotten some emails to that effect.
Seriously, as someone who now recognizes that McCain will win the nomination and who wants him to win the general election, I’d rather that he face Hillary than Obama. Wouldn’t it be good if lots of Republicans crossed over to vote for Hillary?
Maybe. But my view is that during primary season, each party should play in its own sandbox. Anything else feels vaguely like a point-shaving scheme.
I completely agree with Miller. The parties should decide upon their own candidates, which is why I believe that all primaries should be completely closed to members of the party – with no switching on the day of an election. Perhaps their ought to be rules a la college sports, where if you switch parties, you can’t switch back until after an election cycle has passed.
That said, it would be quite hysterical to see Hillary pull it out thanks to Republicans voting for her.
