Defining conservatism

February 13, 2008 | 2 Comments

Spurred in part no doubt from the conversation here yesterday, Jay Anderson has put up a post asking people for their definitions of conservatism, and has put up a pretty good list himself.  This is a topic I’ve explored countless times in the past, so I am not going to get into detail here myself.  If you want to chime in, go to Jay’s blog and offer up your definitions.

I’ll just re-iterate what I said in the comments section – you could do a lot worse than using Kirk’s six tenets as a starting point:

* belief in a transcendant order or natural law
* antagonism to uniformity through egalitarian or utilitarian goals
* importance of social hierarchy rather than a classless societey
* primacy of property rights to freedom
* faith in prescription and distrust of ideal reconstructions of society
* reluctance to accept change or hasty innovation

Thanks for the link, Paul. And I’ll be praying for your medical issues.
