George Will has been hit-or-miss quite a lot lately, but when he hits, he knocks it out of the park.  Today he backs Marco Rubio for the Republican nomination in Floriday for the  U.S. Senate.  The national GOP establishment has idiotically gotten behind Governor Crist, but like Will, I think Rubio will pull it out.  Here’s hoping.

If you notice, Dr. Will’s complaint against Gov. Crist concerns the stimulus bill, cap-and-trade, and subsidized property and casualty insurance. Gov. Crist’s position on the third (as related) is manifestly problematic. With regard to the others, there is a great deal of room for study and discussion. All of these are concerns of the Cato Institute and/or the business lobbies. Will is not speaking out of character (the character he has assumed for the last five or six years, that is).

It will be an interesting primary race. Already is, I suppose. I think the country still has some political burnout when it comes to campaigns. Thing is, Rubio has been criss-crossing the state (not easy) and speaking before very small crowds in informal and often public settings. He is seemingly trying to win votes one at a time. It’s a method that has been often ignored and sometimes with good cause!

But I really respect this. My money is still on Crist, simply because he has so much more of it. And I think he will turn right around and run for prez too. But it would be a good thing for the GOP and for political campaigning period if Rubio can build some real momentum here.
