Another retirement

April 9, 2010 | 1 Comment

And this one is big:

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the court’s oldest member and leader of its liberal bloc, says he is retiring. President Barack Obama now has his second high court opening to fill.

Stevens says he will step down when the court finishes its work for the summer in late June or early July.

John  Paul Stevens is Gerald Ford’s “gift” to the United States.  He made one Supreme Court appointment in his life, and the result was one of the Nation’s most virulent left-wing hacks.

Stevens’s retirement won’t tilt the Court – his replacement could hardly be more left than him – but it will cement that seat will remain in progressive hands for another generation.  K-Lo quips that it serves as a reminder that elections have consequences, although in this particular case the cliche sadly doesn’t ring all that true.

Ford, who personified the term RINO, stood proudly behind his nomination of Stevens in 2005. I am so glad that the fumble-witted Ford “liberated” Poland in a debate with Carter late in the campaign in 76, was too stupid to admit he made a mistake for a week, and thereby lost the election to Carter. His losing paved the way for Reagan winning in 1980 and that is the only positive thing I can say about Ford’s miserable term as President.
